Employment Law
Nada Shaath v. Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles Super Ct. No. 21STCV22706): On September 26, 2024, a jury awarded a $2 million verdict in favor of plaintiff Nada Shaath and against defendant LAUSD, in a case where the plaintiff alleged race discrimination, FEHA retaliation and other related claims. Plaintiff alleged that she was denied a promotion in 2020 based on her race and national origin; and that the position was given to someone who was much less qualified than she was. Plaintiff also alleged that she was retaliated against due to a report she wrote previously alleging misuse of Title IV funds. Defendant denied all allegations, contending that the position plaintiff was seeking was filled by someone more qualified than she was, by a unanimous vote of 4 panel members. A jury ultimately found in favor of plaintiff’s claim of failure to prevent retaliation, awarding her $2 million in damages. Plaintiff was represented by Jay S. Rothman & Associates. Defendant was represented by Clyde & Co. US LLP.
