
City of Los Angeles Settles Auto Accident Case Involving On-Duty Police Officer for $8 Million

Justyce Chavez v. City of Los Angeles, et al. (Los Angeles Super Ct. No. 21STVC337700): On July 18, 2024 the City of Los Angeles agreed to the terms of an $8 million settlement to resolve a case filed by plaintiff Justyce Chavez wherein she was injured after being broadsided by a squad car driven by LAPD officer Ruby Aguirre. Officer Aguirre ran a red light doing 60mph, striking plaintiff’s vehicle which resulted in her sustaining catastrophic injuries including pelvic fractures and joint dislocations. Officer Aguirre was charged with reckless driving because of the incident. Although defendants stipulated to liability prior to trial, they argued that plaintiff’s injuries had resolved and would not require future treatment. Plaintiff was represented by Panish, Shea, Boyle $ Ravipudi LLP. Defendant was represented by the Office of Los Angeles City Attorney.
